Ships Log November 18, 1793
Mid day: vessel spotted behind us on the horizon.
Mr. Pedro confirmed the ship to be a three master flying republican colours. On
Captain Faure's orders we turned about to meet the vessel and commanded all crew to quarters. The republican vessel fired on us as soon as we where within range and
Captain Faure ordered
Master Powers to return fires. During the initial firing exchange no damage was dealt to either side, the enemy missed us on all counts and from our current range our shots could not penetrate their hull. We brought our ship in on the republican vessel and got off the first shots at a decent range, bringing down their mizzen mast and starting the ship on fire. We continued to fire on the ship until it became clear that they where disabled either by the fires or by our cannon fire.
The republican vessel surrendered and
Captain Faure lead our men in boarding them.
Captain Faure grilled the republican vessels captain for information on why they attacked us, but as the vessel had begun to sink he ordered the defeated crew aboard the longboats and all hands abandoned the doomed wreck.
The boarding party managed to capture:
- 1 8lb Cannon
- 1 Box of Tobacco
- 8 Bottles of Wine
- 3500 pieces of eight
After we got clear of the sinking wreck
Captain Faure had us circle back to continue questioning the enemy captain. With some 'persuasion' from
Mr. Pedro the enemy captain relinquished his uniform and those of his crew adding further insult to the enemy captains already poor battle performance.
When we began to stow away our plunder I found out that the crew had poorly packed our cargo. In fact we where carrying to much cargo and in an effort to get it all into the ships hold the cargo had been stored in such away that we could have very easily become unbalanced from a collision or volley of enemy fire. In order to remedy this problem I had some of our cargo moved to occupy one of the cannon batteries. This unfortunately puts us down 2 guns and with fact that we are overladen we are also sitting much lower in the water making handling somewhat more difficult. As a result of this I performed a complete inventory of the ships stock. More bad news was awaited us however as I discovered that we where completely bereft of
oil and will not be able to light any of our
lanterns. I have put in to have some
oil purchased when we next make port, perhaps we could trade some of our 50 bars of
soap.
Despite having to crowd around the galley stove for light the crew celebrated the victory with 4 bottles of fine
wine captured from the republican vessel

(only some things take up cargo space in the pirates RPG: food, cannon shots, consignments, and extra cannons. 500 food consume 1 cargo space as do 50 cannon balls. Also a consignment, a bunch of random goods for trading, take up one cargo space. Finally a cargo space can be refitted to instead hold 2 cannons, so I figure that the reverse is also true. Technically unused cannons, cannons that cannot be fired, do not count as taking up cargo space.)
